Mastodon Updates#

Mastodon+glitch v4.6 was released this month bringing several new features, and some design updates, particularly on user profiles.

  • Collections are now a thing that exist
  • You can now import and export your filters.
  • Account display name length limit increased from 30 to 40 characters
  • Alt text length limit for media attachments increased to 10,000 characters
  • It’s now possible to add alt-text to profile and header images, instead of writing them in your bio.

There were also a couple of minor follow up patches v4.6.1, and v4.6.2.

Wasabi Media Cleanup#

At the beginning of the month I took some time to reduce the amount of storage we were using on Wasabi…

These are media files which have federated out to other servers before May 2025 with URLs pointing directly at Wasabi’s servers instead of the peoplemaking.games domain. If the files are removed from Wasabi’s servers and somebody on a remote server views one of these old posts, the media will fail to load. Mastodon unfortunately doesn’t have any mechanism to update or refresh the media URLs in the old cached posts to point to the peoplemaking.games domain instead.

Using Wasabi’s access logs, I generated a list of all of the media files that had been accessed in the past 6 months, and deleted the rest, which dropped our storage from 48 GB down to 18 GB.

Unfortunately, I didn’t realize / forgot that Wasabi has a minimum storage fee of 1TB. So the Wasabi charge will be staying the same, regardless of how much storage we use below that 1TB minimum. I suppose I’ll probably start using it as another backup location, since we’re already paying for it.
