Server Outage and Upgrade#

The server was offline unexpectedly for about 7 hours on September 22nd for emergency maintenance. After a reboot to apply OS updates, the server failed to come back online due to a corrupted boot disk, and had to be restored from backup.

As a result we’re now running on newer hardware, with an upgraded OS and database. The downside is that the newer hardware has increased the main server cost from $50 to $90, bringing total expenses up to around $120/mo. Thanks, LLMs.

These were upgrades I had already planned on doing in the near future, so the boot issue mainly just forced the timeline to move up.

Mastodon Updates#

There were a couple of small patches to Mastodon this month, v4.7.1 and v4.7.2, containing behind the scenes and security fixes.

Costs and Donations#

Due to the server hardware upgrade, the Main Server cost increased this month.

Fortunately the existing donations are just right to cover the new monthly bills, and we have a comfortable rainy day fund to keep things rolling.
